If I were to start my classroom today with all the space in the world, this map would be my ideal environment. This classroom has desks set up for collaboration between students, a supply cabinet not too far from the desks, and a table for group work with a chair in front so I can supervise my students. The only thing this classroom map is missing is a closet, which I would put on the left side of the map. I am a firm believer in the Lev Vygotsky's theory of Social Development in which students interact precedes cognitive development according to age. Students will learn best if they are able to socially interact with each other and they way these desks are set up give students the best opportunity to do that. With that theory in mind, all the students will have a good view of the chalkboard when we go over material and content in the class and will be able to discuss material and do group work within their groups or even move around to sit at another set of desks to assist them in their learning. I have learned that it would be down right evil to put students in a position and an environment open to conversation and tell them not to talk, so my classroom will be heavily discussion based and the environment will be set up in a way where they can develop through social interactions.
