It is important for students to have rules and routines to follow for a safe environment in the classroom. Although it is important to establish rules and routines for the students to follow, it is also important to not overwhelm the students with a law book full of expectations. It is the teacher's responsibility to demonstrate good behavior in the classroom, and use reinforcements and rewards throughout the day to encourage good behavior. For my classroom, I only have three golden rules because I believe these rules can fall under many categories for good behavior. The first rule is more about respect than anything else. Respect can apply to what a student says to another, polite behavior during lectures or group presentations, and respect to one another's space. The first rule knocks out quite a few negative acts of behavior. The second rule establishes effort, and students must be engaged in the content to try their best, so it is my job to interest the students in the material. If students try their best, they will more likely than not perform well in assessments and assignments. Having fun is the most important rule. Learning should be fun, and it is my job to make it fun. The rule itself is more about attitude rather than actually having fun, which is part of the routines. I want the students to come in with a smile and get themselves organized because I believe that once students crack their first smile of the day, it will be contagious to others who did not have the best of mornings, and they will feel comfortable in a classroom where people at least seem happy to be there. I want students to start off the day by interacting with each other because I do not think it is any fair to hold them to a standard to walk in the classroom silently and sit silently to wait for me to start talking. With that being said, I would like students to be quiet during attendance, unless their name is called, so I can plan my day accordingly. Throughout the day, I just want the students to remember the three rules and have fun while learning. I will use reinforcers and gold stickers to reward good behavior, so they can continue to learn more than just content knowledge. They will learn how to behave in different settings. When students leave, it is my responsibility as well as it is the students' to make sure they are 100% prepared to leave. Students practice how to be responsible in the classroom and this skill will help them in other aspects of life. That is the whole purpose of going to school, right? Students attend everyday in order to learn skills they will need in the future.
